Omega 3 and 6 Test

This at home omega 3 and 6 fatty acid test measures the amount of omega 3 that you have in your cells, known as your omega-3 index and establishes the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 in your body. Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids, which must be consumed through the diet.

Having the right balance between the two is important to prevent heart disease.

More about this test

Omega 3 and 6 are ‘essential’ fatty acids, this means that they must be consumed through the diet. As essential nutrients they are present in the membrane of every human cell. They are also used in many other capacities within the body; for energy production, brain function, blood pressure regulation, immune system and heart health.

It is important to have a good level of omega 3 present in the body as well as a low ratio of omega 6 to 3 because of the role these essential fatty acids play in inflammation. Omega 3 is a precursor to anti-inflammatory molecules, whereas omega 6 is a precursor to pro-inflammatory molecules. Whilst the inflammatory response is important in immunity and helping the body fight infection, chronic low-level inflammation can lead to the development of chronic disease.

The recommended ratio of omega 6:3 is 4:1 or less, however the modern western diet has led to a huge increase in this ratio with many having ratios of 20:1 or higher. This level greatly increases the risk of developing heart disease and has been linked to obesity. The level of omega 3 present in cells is also thought to be predictive of heart disease risk with a low level being associated with an increased risk of death from heart disease.

Your results will show the level of omega-3 in your blood and whether this level is low and remedial action is required, intermediate and remedial action would be beneficial, healthy or ideal. It will also show you your omega 6:3 ratio and whether this is optimal, acceptable or high.

Omega 3 index assesses the amount of omega 3 in your body. Omega 3 fatty acids are the “good fats” found in oily fish, nuts and seeds that can help to protect the body against heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol and rheumatoid arthritis.

Whilst omega 6, when eaten in moderation as part of a healthy diet, is good for you, too much omega 6 compared to omega 3 can cause high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Omega 6 is found in polyunsaturated foods such as butter and vegetable oils.
