The liver and kidneys, as major organs, play an important role in the body. The liver detoxifies substances in the blood like alcohol, caffeine, paracetamol and hormones, as well as producing enzymes, blood clotting factors and bile, it helps to maintain hormone balance, and stores vitamins and glycogen. The kidneys help to regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance and filter the blood, getting rid of waste products.

Liver function testing can help identify blocked bile ducts, jaundice, Gilbert’s syndrome, liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and some types of cancer. Kidney function testing can help identify kidney disease, kidney stones and heart failure.

Fats are an essential constituent of cells and used as a source of energy in the body, however having too much of certain types of fats in the blood is not healthy and can lead to heart attack and stroke. Testing the levels of the different cholesterol can identify high cholesterol and whether you are at greater risk of heart and stroke.

CRP is a protein made by the liver and released into the blood within a few hours after tissue injury, the start of an infection or other inflammation causes. It is often the first evidence of inflammation or an infection in the body. CRP can also be consistently raised in people with chronic inflammatory conditions. Measuring CRP is not specific to diagnose any condition, but it does serve as a general non-specific marker that an infection or inflammation is developing.

Cholesterol looks at the levels of the different types of fats in your blood; cholesterol and triglycerides. Fats are an essential constituent of cells and a source of energy, however having too much of certain types of fats in the blood can be indicative of heart attack and stroke risk.

Markers tested
• High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL)
• Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)
• Total cholesterol
• Total triglycerides
• Cholesterol ratio

The liver is the largest organ in your body (after the skin) and a vitally important one. It plays a major role in metabolism, detoxification and protein synthesis. The health and function of the liver can be tested through the liver enzymes, waste products and the main protein made by the
liver.

Markers tested
• Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
• Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
• Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)
• Bilirubin
• Albumin
• Globulin
• Total Protein

The kidneys play a key role in your body by filtering the blood, excreting waste products, balancing electrolyte levels, controlling blood pressure and stimulating the production of red blood cells. The health and function of the kidneys can be tested through measuring the levels of certain waste products in the blood, the volume of blood filtered and certain electrolytes.

Markers tested
• Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)
• Creatinine
