More about this test

HbA1c, also known as glycated haemoglobin or haemoglobin A1c, is a measurement of your blood glucose level. HbA1c is formed by some of the glucose circulating in the blood sticking to the haemoglobin in red blood cells. The more glucose in the blood, the higher the HbA1c level will be. Blood glucose does fluctuate throughout the day and can vary from day-to-day, but the HbA1c test result gives average levels over the previous 2-3 months, allowing for an accurate picture blood glucose.

Type 2 diabetes doesn’t just happen overnight, blood glucose levels rise and increase steadily over a long period of time as a result of insulin resistance. During this time an individual may or may not exhibit symptoms, however what is certain is that blood glucose levels will be elevated above the normal level, which can be identified through an HbA1c test. Possible symptoms of diabetes include tiredness, lethargy, blurred vision, wounds, cuts or sores, which take a long time to heal, itching skin or yeast infections, excessive thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination and leg pain.

Being diagnosed pre-Diabetes is a critical point in the development of diabetes.

Taking positive active steps at this point in your lifestyle choices can turn your whole future health around, as early action can stop, or slow down the chance of ever developing type 2 diabetes.

• Blood collection device using finger-prick method

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease which is becoming increasingly common across all ages. Up to one third of adults in the UK have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes.

HbA1C testing is not suitable for everyone.

We do not recommend HbA1c testing if any of the following apply to you:
• You have anaemia
• You have had your spleen removed
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding
• You have a blood borne disorder

Your results will show your HbA1c level and whether you at low, moderate or high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The result will also show whether your level is at a possible diabetic level.
