Cholesterol is essential to our body, as they are used in the production of certain hormones (such as testosterone and oestradiol)and they help form cell membranes.

 

However high or low levels of certain types of cholesterol can increase your risk of developing heart disease and suffering from a stroke. This is because bad cholesterol increases the formation of fatty deposits in your blood vessels, which can break off to form a clot which can then block an artery depriving an area of the heart or brain of oxygen. 

 

Bad levels of cholesterol can be inherited from your family, even if you are slim, young and exercise.

More often than not though, regular exercise and having a healthy diet can help lower bad cholesterol levels.

 

Your total cholesterol result on its own will not inform you of your risk of developing heart disease, this is because total cholesterol is made up of good and bad cholesterol.

LDL (low density lipoprotein) can contribute to cardiovascular disease and is called ‘Bad’ cholesterol, whilst HDL (high density lipoprotein) gives you protection and is generally referred to as ‘Good’ Cholesterol.

 

The best indicator is your Cholesterol ratio, which calculates the ratio of your ‘protective’ HDL to your total cholesterol level.

 

Triglycerides are usually raised due to genetics, and an increased level, like cholesterol, can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
