More about this test

The CYD (Check Your Drink) drink spike test detects two of the most common date rape drugs; Ketamine and GHB (Gamma Hydroxybutyrate). CYD can be used with a range of different drinks wherever you are. Performing the test couldn’t be easier, with only a test strip and two drops of drink required.

Taking only seconds to produce a result, the test can be performed within any social setting, including bars, house-parties, festivals, and concerts.

Unfortunately thousands of people worldwide have their drinks spiked each year. In a YouGov poll, one in three women and one in five men knew someone who had been spiked or had themselves been spiked.

In the event of a positive result or if you or a friend start to feel strange or more drunk than expected, don’t delay in getting help. Also alert someone you trust, a friend or staff/host and get to a safe place. If necessary, or if you are in danger, contact the police. If symptoms worsen call an ambulance immediately, or ask someone to do this on your behalf.

After putting a drop of your drink on to each of the test patches, if your drink has been spiked with either GHB or ketamine you will see a distinct colour change within 10-30 seconds.

  • If GHB has been detected you will see a colour change from pink to blue
  • If ketamine has been detected you will see a colour change from yellow to orange

If there is no colour change it means that GHB and/or Ketamine have not been

Tell someone you completely trust, such as a friend, a staff member, security staff, medical professional or the police.

If you’re not with anyone, call someone you trust and get to a safe place. Ask to use a phone if yours has been stolen. Be wary of accepting help from a stranger and don’t leave with someone you don’t know. If you need urgent help, call 999.

Otherwise, ask someone you trust to take you to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department. Tell the medical staff that you think your drink has been spiked. If you’re advised to go home, arrange for a trusted friend or relative to take you home and stay with you until the drugs have fully left your system.

The CYD drink spiking test has been developed and validated by University College London and Strathclyde University and will detect GHB test and Ketamine. Each test has been tested using a large range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to check for false positives.

Clinical trials were carried out by the Clinical Trials Laboratory Services and Homerton University Hospital in 2013. All tests and procedures were performed according to the Standard Operating Procedures of Clinical Trials Laboratory Services Limited (CTLS).

Red wine and blackcurrant-based cocktails can stain the test patches leading to a false reaction.

Milk based drinks, such as milk and baileys will always give a positive GHB test result (even when there is none present) and should therefore not be used with this test.

The sensitivity of ketamine detection is reduced by red wine. It is possible that ketamine could be present but may not give a positive when testing with red wine.

GHB is UNDETECTABLE in very acidic drinks such as bitter lemon and lime cordial. The drink spiking test should therefore not be used with such drinks as it could potentially give a false negative result.
